Emmanuel recalls how her mom was the first person to realize her talent for acting when she was at St Hilda's School. It closed in the year 2014. The Westcliff High School For Girls grammar school followed. In an interview for The New York Daily News, she explained, "When my mom was three, she was always causing drama. So she thought maybe I should channel it properly, so I began studying acting, singing and dancing classes." At the age of 10 she was cast as Young Nala, West End's version of The Lion King. Then, she was cast as Missandei in HBO's fantasy series Game of Thrones. She revealed to Jimmy Kimmel that she heard about her being chosen for the role while she was working as a shop attendant at the clothing shop. Emmanuel was promoted to a regular cast member in 2015 following her win the role. Missandei is the sole prominent female character on the show, was a person of colour. The scene in which she was entombed in chains was not well-liked by fans. The scene was also criticized as an example of evasion and invoked images of slavery. Emmanuel later stated to The Guardian: The response to the passing of Missandei was overwhelming because she was not alone. People who felt excluded or who were marginalized felt connected to her or were influenced by them, especially women of color. When she passed away, and the way she died - it was extremely painful for many because they were thinking, 'Oh you're not! This is how they want to remember the sole woman of their race.
